Mo’ people, mo’ problems. When things go bad and the grid is down, the worst case scenario is to be trapped in an environment where YOU are prepared but you’re surrounded by people who aren’t. It’s the underlying premise of all survival planning, but in a country with a lot of people (330 million in the US), how does one actually avoid the masses in the event of a national disaster that leads to desperation, looting and violence?
Well, there are a lot of simple strategies and no, running off to the national parks is not necessarily the smartest move depending on the circumstances. The key is to not have the same plan as everyone else. And, a person, family or survival group could theoretically hide in the middle of a city just as easily as they could hide in the woods.
In the next issue of the Wild Bunch, I’ll examine some moderate to advanced tactics for avoiding other people and keeping a low profile in the event of calamity. This is not about going “gray man” and trying to blend in (which I argue is a fantasy in most situations). Rather, this is about completely disappearing.
